These original works are all on wood painted with wood stain, acrylic and recycled paint. Each painting has wood burned detail to create texture and depth. The natural elements of the wood are carefully considered before I begin each piece. Incorporating the wood grain and knots make each piece unique.
Balance is an important theme in my work. I aim to achieve balance through the visual contrast between horizontal and vertical lines, color or smooth and rough textures.
I continue to explore opposition and the balance that is created from opposition. Chaos vs. Stability, The Familiar vs. The Unknown, Stillness vs. Movement and Light vs Dark.
Rather than there being tension between the opposites I hope to create balance between the two.

“Revolve” was inspired by a hike I have done throughout the past 20 years in the Columbia River Gorge and the song, “Both Sides Now” by Joni Mitchell. The clouds are moved from the sky into the foreground swirling around the trees; reminiscent of the change of perspective that comes with age and within the landscapes that surround us.

Looking for a personalized piece of art that captures a special place that you have been?
WHERE TO START
We’ll begin discussing the composition, size, layout and cost. In addition to color and incorporating natural wood elements, specifically knots and wood grain.
I’ll quote you a flat fee* based on the complexity of your piece and we’ll schedule a studio or in-home visit. This visit ranges from 1 - 1 1/2 hours.
THE PROCESS
I can create the image through my process of incorporating the natural elements of wood, wood burning techniques and painting with stain (water based) and acrylic on custom birch panels or reclaimed wood with a custom frame. A clear coat of Satin finish is applied to the final piece.
ORDER, CONTRACT & DEPOSIT
After the details are discussed I will create a sketch of the commission and finalize the color palette with you for a flat fee*. We will discuss contract information and more details at this time.
Before transferring the image onto wood I will request a non-refundable down payment of one third of the total cost. The painting will take 4-6 weeks to complete. The painting can be shipped UPS.
Note: Large paintings may require additional shipping charges. I will provide an estimate before beginning the painting.
CUSTOMER GUARANTEE
If for any reason you are not satisfied with the final product I can make adjustments. If you are not satisfied after final completion of the piece I will retain the artwork and the non-refundable deposit. No additional fees will be charged. I like to make the experience as enjoyable as possible.
*Fees are absorbed into the total cost of the commission

The line of a tree branch originally inspired my work. The absence of leaves allowed interwoven lines to connect and create multiple windows. The spaces between the branches intrigued me as they framed what existed beyond. I continue to look within these lines as I seek the patterns of trees found in the grains of wood. As the grain twists and turns, it begins to transform from lines, to threads, to paths that all lead to the soft-spoken reminder that everything is connected.
A cycle is discovered, a balance of give and take.

My process began by reproducing images of trees on reclaimed cabinet doors. I would spend hours sanding multiple layers of paint off of each cabinet in an attempt to reach the natural wood. I would then create an image of a tree with acrylic paint. Eventually, I felt that painting on wood was not enough, the natural wood needed to be exposed. My work evolved as I began to explore the individual parts of the tree and the wood. Exploring this perspective has led to multiple discoveries. I now incorporate the natural elements of the wood into my work looking more closely at the grain and the knots. I begin by drawing onto the surface using a wood burning tool. After I have created the image of a tree I add stain to enhance the grain of the wood. Rather than paint, I mostly use water based wood stain for it’s translucent qualities. The stain provides color but allows the wood grain to still be visible. While creating these treescapes I painted the individual sections of grain. These works are inspired from the nature that surrounds me in the Portland city parks, mountains and coastline of the Pacific Northwest.

These landscapes on wood combine my drawing and painting experience with my love of trees. My process begins by observing the patterns found in the wood grain. Determining which parts of the grain, often looked at as threads or paths, will be exposed and how they will be woven into the landscape as water, sky, mountains or wind. Their presence represents change. The trees play an important role in the piece. Almost like actors on a stage they are carefully situated in the landscape as an anchor; constant. I combine colored layers of stain and acrylic with wood burned details that wrap around the sides of the painting to reflect a cycle or continuum.
The intention of the final piece is to not only capture a memory or evoke a feeling, but to create comfort with what is familiar and curiosity with the unknown.
The Saplings Series evolved from the pandemic. I wanted to create small original works that were accessible to a broader audience. The series combines printmaking, drawing and painting inspired by the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.
The process begins by creating a lino print. Lino printing is a printmaking technique in which a sheet of linoleum is used for a relief surface. A wood burning tool is used to draw the landscape. The surface is painted with stain and acrylic paint. The natural elements of the wood are always considered in each piece.

The inspiration for this series came quite simply from a question. A friend of mine was attending one of my art shows when he said, “Are you ever going to paint the top of a tree?” I had spent so much time focusing on the trunks and the space between that it kept me from looking up. This past year I spent more time looking up observing the sky and how the light filters through the moving branches of the Doug Fir Trees. There are times that the Doug Firs appear to be standing strong and still; dark silhouettes that contrast the soft skies. All of this is a new territory for exploration.
Thank you, Doug, for asking that question!

This Series is inspired by my interest in and admiration for Scandinavian Design and it’s philosophy. I have always admired the emphasis on clean lines and simple design inspired by nature. I am continually thinking about all the extra steps it takes to create something of excellent quality but is simplistic and minimal. I feel that to achieve Minimalism it requires presence and discipline. This is a challenge I continue to explore in my work. I am also drawn to the contrast between stark white and pops of vibrant color.

I credit my son, Liam and daughter, Lydia for my Change of Season Series and my Room to Grow Series. The time I spend with my children makes me slow down, play more, go for walks and be outside more often.
The Change of Season works were originally wood burned on wood paper and painted with water based wood stain and acrylic paint. These pieces were reproduced on recycled paper. Reproductions of these images are available for purchase in my online shop.
The wood collage on wood paper were originally created with hand-cut, wood shapes, painted with wood stain and acrylic and glued onto wood paper. Extra detail was carefully added with a wood burning tool. This creates a unique combination of collage, painting and wood burning. These pieces were reproduced on recycled paper and are 8" x 10". Reproductions of these images are available for purchase in my online shop.

A wood worker once said, "a good wood worker does not have any scraps." I do not consider myself much of a wood worker, but it did inspire me as a painter to explore the possibilities of painting and wood burning on different shapes and sizes of wood. It is very satisfying to re-use scraps of wood to create a new tree.
